Chassis

Lead: Logan Smith
5th-year Mechanical Engineering Grad student

"
Chassis works on bringing all the subsystems together in a cohesive system. We work on providing a strong and stable foundation that holds all the components. We also make safety our highest priority and that the pod won't come apart while traveling through the tube."
Transportation

"
We make sure the pod doesn't crash into the wall. Our team is designing mechanical mechanisms to keep the pod going straight and stable at 310 mph all the while contending with the challenges of a near vacuum environment."

Braking

Joshua Pratt
3rd-year Mechanical Engineering

"
This year we are working on a magnetic braking system. Our system will contain upwards of 200 incredibly strong magnets and will ideally achieve a deceleration of almost 2.5 g's! We will also design the brakes to actuate over the track to create a variable braking force to maximize our stopping distance!"
Power Delivery

"The main goal we have for this year is being able to supply the required power for all the subsystems especially propulsion with the Linear Induction Motor. A couple of other key aspects of electronics include proper sensor calibration and wire management."

“We work on all the software to make sure the pod behaves smoothly and safely, including the low-level embedded system, networking, and the control panel GUI!”
Propulsion

"Propulsion is designing and manufacturing a Linear Induction Motor.  This type of motor uses three oscillating magnetic fields to induce another magnetic field in the track which we then roll along. We should be able to reach top speeds of up to 310 mph!"
