Not-A-Boring Competition

The overarching goal of the Not-A-Boring Competition is to rapidly design innovative tunnel boring technology in order to improve tunneling speed and efficiency. The competition centers around designing and then building a tunnel boring machine with a bore diameter of 0.5 m, and a tunnel length of 30 m at a nominal depth of 1.5 m. The overarching goal of the annual competition is to 'beat the snail', referring to Gary the Snail who moves at 2.64 feet per minute. Each machine is evaluated on how it performs the tunnel boring operation with a focus on speed, while also fitting the tunnel specifications. Over this next year, our team will design and manufacture a tunnel boring machine with a focus on innovative design to participate in the competition.
